New Delhi: The spectrum acquired by telecom companies in the recent auction will help to address the pent-up demand for higher internet usage amid the pandemic, which augurs well for an infrastructure provider like Indus Towers Managing Director Bimal Dayal said.

When additional spectrum comes in, such pent-up demand is clearly addressed. The quality of these networks become very good, you will be able to do things from the dark spot as well, you will get capacities on time, and hence, you will end up consuming more, which only starts the spiral of more requirement of more number of sites as well,” Dayal said.

He was referring to concerns whether the new spectrum would impact capacity-led tenancy demand for
Indus.

“I think the intent of operators is very clear - to go into the interiors and have a deeper coverage as well. So far, 50% of our rollout is for capacity, 50% of our rollout is for coverage, and there is a much bigger pent up demand for sites at critical locations,” Dayal said, during the company’s earnings call on Friday.

Indus Towers on Thursday reported a fiscal fourth quarter net profit of Rs 1,364 crore for the January-March quarter, up 38% on-year driven by strong tower additions.

Dayal said that the company will renegotiate its contracts with cash-strapped operators to find a mid-path solution, as close to a third of the company’s colocation portfolio is coming up for renewal this year.

As of March 31 2021, Indus owned and operated 179,225 towers with 322,438 co-locations across India.

“The situation is stretched for our operators. If you once again go back in time, we managed to give certain concessions, which was escalation freeze. However, what we got was extension, which I think was a very good win-win situation for both operators, and us as well,” he said.

“I'm certainly not denying that there won't be any negotiation, but we believe that we do hold cards, and it won't be any one-way street here.”

The top executive also pointed that the satellite communication providers like Elon Musk-led
Spacex and Bharti-backed OneWeb making headway in India’s broadband space do not pose a threat to the future requirement of towers.

“Ubiquitous commercially comparable alternate to broadband, which, you know, current technologies or terrestrial technologies are providing, I don't see that as a competition. On the contrary, this would be looked at as a complementary technology to what is being done, as well as, connect areas where it is very difficult to connect terrestrially,” Dayal said.
