The CFO’s comments came in the backdrop of India conducting a seven-day 5G spectrum auction which concluded earlier this month, and that received a good response from the telcos. Market leader Reliance Jio emerged as the largest bidder, spending over Rs 88,000 crore; it was followed by Airtel which spent Rs 43,000 crore, and Vodafone Idea which spent Rs 18,799 crore. First-time bidder Adani Data Networks had won airwaves worth Rs 212 crore. Below are the edited excerpts from Tech M CFO’s interaction.

Q: The 5G spectrum auction just concluded...What sort of opportunities Tech M sees for itself?

Rohit Anand: We provide a very comprehensive 5G solution portfolio. We cater to the international market across the world from network services, we work with OEMs on upgrading the 5G equipment, and we also work with enterprises, specifically industries which are implementing 5G private networks. So, there are different areas of work going on with network providers, with OEMs and then with enterprise on projects.
The company has a portfolio of about 40% in the Communications, Media and Entertainment Business (CME), it’s a huge domain that we carry for so many years. People look at us as consultants, as their strategy partners. Tech M enables the execution for them from a solution standpoint. We have the whole capability with us starting from consulting, and then we are working across the globe, with the providers. In India also, as people participate in that and we collectively work with them on solutions, we will continue to find the right strategy for us.
Q; Is Tech M fully prepared to help players set up 5G networks?

Rohit Anand: We are absolutely prepared, and our preparedness is not just limited to India. We are a global player right now. If one sees the 5G adoption around the world is less than 20%. There is a huge headroom to go in the next three to four years on 5G adoption. The pace and speed of it has been a little slow. But that is good for us because it's more staggered over a period of time versus a lumpy business case, where it peaks for a period of 12 to 18 months and then settles.
Q: You plan to begin with network players and the OEMs, and thereafter the enterprises? Is this correct understanding?

Rohit Anand: Yes, from a sequential perspective, right now, it's going to be working with the network players and OEMs to enable their equipment to be 5G ready. As we move forward, and as the network gets more, and available to different enterprises, the enterprise use cases for 5G from pilot adoption right now will become a little bit more broad- based.
That (enterprises) cycle will be pretty interesting to watch out for because for instance if one looks at manufacturing companies, when they adopt 5G, there will be benefits on each shop floor for them. Likewise, the benefits of the 5G adoption in sectors like healthcare are going to be dramatic.
We have a tremendous opportunity because of increased adoption of 5G going forward, not just in the world of Metaverse and gaming but it will be across the industry where the adoption will be more long-term versus just the network rollout.
