TEMA emphasized on the need of a coherent industrial policy<\/a> in order to expedite the domestic manufacturing in Telecom and ICT sectors and the appointment of Shankar is one such step in that direction.
Ravi Sharma, Chairman TEMA<\/a>, emphasized that with the government’s vision of an AatmNirbhar Bharat and the government’s priority for Make in India requires renewed industrial manufacturing policy for the technology sector as that will save on foreign exchange and will also generate employment opportunities.
Sharma added that the industry body expects that the government will formulate a ‘progressive and encouraging’ industrial policy for the technology sector under the leadership of Shankar.
“I am happy to lead the TEMA Council of Industrial Policy<\/a> and we shall suggest a good strategy for taking India to the next level in technology equipment manufacturing...We need new policy instruments that steer market forces to deliver desired outcomes of creating jobs and achieving self-reliance in our open market economy,” said Ajay Shankar<\/a> on his appointment.
Ajay Shankar retired as Secretary Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP<\/a>). He also served the National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council (NMCC) as Member Secretary for three years. He was the Chairman of the National Productivity Council and of the Quality Council of India. He is credited with setting up the Invest India initiative.
“India needs to gear up for implementable domestic manufacturing policies. TEMA will be benefited from the rich experience of Ajay Shankar in formulating a manufacturing policy for Telecom, ICT sector,” said Sandeep Aggarwal, Vice Chairman, TEMA.
