NEW DELHI: Newly-formed The Mobile Association (TMA), with smartphone companies such as JioPhone, Foxconn, HTC, Huawei, Lava and Google as among members, is adopting an aggressive strategy to facilitate the fifth-generation (5G) technology-based device ecosystem in the run up to the new technology roll out by 2020.

“With telecom service providers running trials as a precursor to the commercial launch of 5G services, an equal emphasis needs to be placed on ensuring adequate availability of 5G-enabled smart mobile
devices,” TMA in a statement said on Wednesday.

The group said that it has plans to do seminars and workshops to get the 5G ecosystem ready in line with the government’s ambition to launch ultra-high speed data services in tandem with global roll out timelines.

Telecom Minister
Manoj Sinha Tuesday said that the Narendra Modi-led NDA government would not want to miss the 5G bus as was in the case of 3G and 4G technologies, and would ensure that the consumers reap full benefits of technological advancement.

The 5G technology is also poised to accelerate the government's ambitious
Digital India initiative.

In September 2017, the Department of Telecommunications (
DoT) had formed a high-level 5G forum with representatives from Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and chairman of the Telecom Standard Development Organisation of India (TSDSI), Abhay Karandikar, to chalk out the 5G roadmap for India.

Sinha, earlier said that the country could be greatly aided by adopting 5G early, and added that the government has a unique opportunity to leverage the power of 5G to drive forward the Digital India agenda, and accelerating economic growth and societal development.

TMA said it believes that by harnessing 5G capabilities, India can leapfrog in technological advancement and the new technology would also help new-age entrepreneurs to take advantage of high-speed data services which would also facilitate other industries.

“Both the government and the industry are keenly aware of the need to enable a viable ecosystem and adopt best-in-class technology for the growth and proliferation of mobile devices in India,” Bhawna Kumari, president of The Mobile Association said.

The newly-established group is also organizing a day-long summit on the growth of mobile devices in the country on June 18.

“With the rise of cutting-edge digital technologies and innovations in the mobile sector, Make in India has become one of the largest start-up incubation experiments in the world,” Kumari added.
