""MUMBAI: Mobile wallet companies are growing by leaps and bounds and are hot among investors, but doubts have emerged about whether the numbers on usage and transactions being touted by different sets of players do reflect the reality in terms of business.

While there is no reliable data from regulators, consultants, companies and investors are peddling their own data to substantiate claims which often lead to conflicting claims.

Market leader Paytm has pegged the total number of users of its wallet at 135 million, which some analysts say may be too high.

"When we did
due diligence on these companies we found a substantial overlap of the total users. As per our estimates, 63 per cent of the total wallets are active," said Ashvin Parekh, managing partner of consultancy Ashvin Parekh Advisory Services. The industry has grown in three waves --- mobile recharges, utility bill payments and online shopping. "Now the density checks (to calculate actual usage) reveal that the actual number of mobile wallets in use are far lesser than the numbers shown."

But Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma says his company is growing at blistering pace acquiring customers.

"We have registered 58 million transactions in the month of July and now we are seeing 2 million transactions happening every day. We will at least have 750 million transactions this year," said Sharma. While this number shows a phenomenal growth in the mobile payments space in India, a joint study by
Google and AT Kearney 'Digital Retail in 2020: Rewriting the Rules' put the number of online shoppers in India at 50 million in 2015, which is expected to rise to 175 million in five years. Although the Reserve Bank of India does not provide data on the actual number of wallet users, it releases the number of transactions via mobile wallets and also the volume of transactions through them.

RBI data show there were 59.45 million transactions that happened via mobile wallets in July worth a total value of Rs 2,760 crore. This number has also shown a sort of stagnation around the 50 million figure for the year 2015-16.

Parekh explained that the major problem is that most of the mobile-based transactions are happening for bill payments and recharges, the push in online payments for shopping and travel is still in its nascent. As these numbers tend to show different pictures, chief executives of other wallet and payments companies who ET spoke to but did not wish to come on record said that there were some serious discrepancies in the numbers that are quoted around the total wallet users.

"We have seen instances where phone recharge retailers take numbers from his customers and does the mobile top up through the wallet and takes the cashback, mostly unsuspecting customers do not realise that he is making extra per transaction. This also artificially pushes up the wallet numbers," said chief executive of a rival wallet company who did not wish to be identified.

Which is cheapest of them all?
