Microblogging platform<\/a> Twitter<\/a> on Friday said it has banned 45,191 accounts of Indian users in the month of July over violation of its guidelines, as per its compliance report.

This is higher than the number of accounts it blocked in the preceding month when it banned 43,140 accounts.

Under the new
IT Rules 2021<\/a>, social media platforms with more than 5 million users, have to publish monthly compliance reports.

The
microblogging platform<\/a> finds itself in a legal battle in the Karnataka High Court with the Indian government over content blocking orders.

This compliance report also comes after whistleblower Peiter Zatko who was the former head of security at
Twitter<\/a> accused the Indian government of forcing the platform to “hire a government agent on its payroll” and “grant access to sensitive user data.\" This claim, however, was dismissed by Twitter.

Of the suspended accounts between June 26 and July 25, as many as 42,825 accounts were banned for promoting child sexual exploitation, non-consensual nudity, and similar content while another 2,366 accounts were blocked for promoting terrorism.

\"A vast majority of all accounts that are suspended for the promotion of terrorism and child sexual exploitation are proactively flagged by a combination of technology and other purpose-built internal proprietary tools,\" Twitter said in its report.

Further, the microblogging platform received 874 grievances for abuse and harassment through its local grievance mechanism between June 26-July 25, and took action on 70 complaints.

The number of complaints for hateful conduct stood at 303 during the same period. Actions as initiated on 12 such complaints.

Interestingly, when it came to IP-related infringement 13 complaints were received but the platform actioned as many as 44 URLs.

In addition, Twitter said it processed 124 grievances which were appealing account suspensions.

“These were all resolved and the appropriate responses were sent. We overturned none of these account suspensions after reviewing the specifics of the situation,” the company added.

Twitter's report comes a day after social media giant Meta said that it took action against 2.7 crore posts on
Facebook<\/a> and Instagram<\/a> in India in July while the company's instant messaging service WhatsApp<\/a> banned 23.8 lakh accounts.
