KOLKATA: Telecom operator Uninor faces challenges because it is a small player in an intensely competitive market, with just 2G spectrum in a country which is on the cusp of a data revolution, according to Sigve Brekke, who has been named chief executive of the Gurgaon-based firm's Norwegian parent Telenor Group.

"There are new challenges on the horizon: We are still a smaller player in a competitive, rapidly digitising Indian market. Despite only running network on 2G, we have made a commitment - to bring internet for all. We have to fight way above our weight class," Brekke, Telenor's Asia head and a former India CEO, wrote in an article for ET.

Uninor operates in six of India's 22 telecom service areas, serves 46 million subscribers using 2G technology and has plans to connect 50% of its customers to the internet by the end of 2017. It, however, needs to make a decisive move on data growth in India, given that it doesn't have 3G spectrum and 4G is still some way from wide-scale adoption.

Experts said Uninor's failure to win high-speed data airwaves in the March 2015 auction potentially make it a prime candidate for inking a spectrum trading and sharing pact with a holder of liberalised data spectrum once the guidelines are ratified by the Cabinet. The telecom department recently gave final clearance to rules on sharing and trading of airwaves, and is likely to seek Cabinet approval by the end of this month.

"Any spectrum trading and sharing opportunities will depend on the notification and the guidelines and details thereon," a Uninor spokesperson said in an emailed response to ET's query on whether the company would explore a spectrum trading and sharing pact in the near future.

Brekke wrote Uninor had identified "information services, messaging and social media applications were the most demanded internet services". He said Uninor had also "found ways to make those work on 2G technology on less advanced devices and at affordable prices".

However, experts said this won't suffice for Uninor to stay relevant in a market with surging data growth on 3G and ongoing and impending 4G offerings.

Earlier this year, Uninor CEO Vivek Sood had said that 2015 will be a year when the company needs to upgrade its networks to support the surging data-driven traffic. He had told ET that Uninor was evaluating different options to get additional spectrum.

["industry","Uninor","Telenor group","Sigve Brekke
industry/uninor-will-have-to-punch-way-above-its-weight-to-stay-in-the-fight-telenors-sigve-brekke"}}" data-authors="[" kalyan parbat"]" data-category-name="Industry" data-category_id="18" data-date="2015-06-16" data-index="article_1">
