\"Spectrum auctions will be conducted in 2022 to facilitate the roll-out of 5G mobile services within 2022-23 by private telecom providers,\" Sitharaman said.

The FM added that 5G technology, in particular, can enable growth and offer job opportunities. She said the government will come up with a design-led Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for the 5G equipment space.

Currently, private telecom companies Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea are piloting 5G field trials with their equipment partners and enterprise players.

Internet major Google last week said it will invest upto $1 billion into Sunil Mittal-led Airtel, and both companies will look to create India-specific 5G use cases.

The US-tech giant had previously invested Rs 33,737 crore for 7.73% in Jio Platforms.

Sithraman said the government will launch a design-led Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for local manufacturing of 5G telecom equipment. “A scheme for design led manufacturing will be launched soon to build an ecosystem.”

Telecom minister Ashwini Vaishnaw Tuesday informed that the regulator, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), will send its recommendation on 5G auction by March, following which the government will auction airwaves to facilitate the rollout of fifth-generation wireless mobile services.
