India and the United States will join hands to address supply chain challenges for semiconductors, and Washington will help New Delhi boost its semiconductor manufacturing capacity, US deputy assistant secretary, South and Central Asia, Afreen Akhter has said.

Akhter is leading a trade mission of semiconductors industry to India and has met several top government officials in New Delhi.

"I had extremely positive meetings with Indian officials," he told ET. "India and USA are willing to join hands to address supply chain challenges of the semiconductor industry. The USA will assist India in capacity building in this sector."

The US diplomat explained that his trade mission is in the backdrop of the US decision to expand partnership with like-minded countries like India and Taiwan.

India has been looking to create strategic alliances on semiconductors, a critical technology for a variety of products including smartphones, refrigerators and passenger vehicles, particularly after a severe global shortage in the post-Covid period.

When asked about the Quad's role in promoting semiconductor industry, Akhter said US-India semiconductor partnership could contribute to a potential Quad initiative.

India is expecting to attract a total investment of at least $25 billion as a result of its incentive scheme meant to boost local manufacturing of semiconductors and display panels.

The
Narendra Modi government is seeking to attract more big-ticket investments under a $10-billion incentive plan for chip and display production, aiming to make India a key player in the global supply chain.
