New Delhi: Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) has given an initial production order for the JioPhone Next 4G smartphone – developed in partnership with Google – to UTL Neolyncs and is expected to price the device at about Rs 3,500, as it tries to attract more 2G subscribers to its telecom venture Reliance Jio Infocomm from rivals Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel, said people aware of the matter.

RIL is believed to be aiming to place an order of five million units, the initial part of which has gone to UTL Neolyncs, said the people. The company expects to bring this entire order to market in the next six months, they said, but it is wary of the chipset supply crunch which may affect its plans.

The Mukesh Ambani-owned company has said the device will hit the markets on September 10.

UTL Neolyncs, a joint venture between Bengaluru-based UTL Group and Neolync Solutions, has been approved to receive sops under the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for handsets. RIL’s wholly owned unit,
Reliance Strategic Business Ventures Ltd, invested Rs 20 crore in Neolync Solutions earlier this month.

The device was previously being tested at the manufacturing facilities of Wingtech Mobiles, Dixon Technologies,
UTL Neolync and Flextronics Technologies.

JioPhone Next, unveiled at the RIL annual general meeting on June 24 as the world’s most affordable 4G smartphone, is expected to be priced at about Rs 3,500 and will come bundled with various Jio and Google digital services. RIL has not officially revealed the pricing yet.

“JioPhone Next will probably be the only such phone in its price range, hence it can cannibalise phones in Rs 6,000-7,000 category where domestic brands have presence. Getting the price right is important and there will be a pressure on Jio on how much they could subsidize." Navkendar Singh, research director at IDC, told ET.

He said if priced at about Rs 3,500, it won’t fulfil Jio's objective fully – to get 2G feature phone users who typically spend under Rs 1,000 for a device to upgrade – but will still get a lot of people to opt for it.

Jio, which had about 441 million subscribers at June-end, is bidding to touch the 500-million user mark. For that, it is targeting a bulk of the 250 million-plus 2G feature phone users of rivals Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea, along with trying to ensure that its own basic JioPhone users also upgrade to its own network and not move to rivals’.

Queries sent to Jio and UTL Neolyncs did not elicit any response.

Tarun Pathak, associate director at Counterpoint Research, said that to counter the chipset supply crunch, Jio appears to be aiming to freeze suppliers for the long term to achieve economies of scale since the JioPhone Next is here to stay and to drive feature phone to smartphone migration.

“Other than chipsets, power management ICs (PMIC) and display shortages will also pose challenges to Jio,” he said.

Pathak and Singh said that getting more users on the JioPhone Next would mean more users for its digital services which Jio would want to monetise.
