Vaishnaw, also the IT and railways minister, said there were paramount concerns among all nations regarding security of telecom networks. “People want the devices, equipment and network OS to be from trusted sources. New geopolitical realities are staring at all of us,” he explained, asking the industry to give suggestions on what will be a good framework for people to have trusted sources, trusted equipment and also increase the overall trust in the telecom sector.
Speaking on digitisation of services, he said Covid had accelerated the digitisation of services; be it entertainment, shopping, everything had shifted to digital platforms. “This is a new opportunity but also leading to social disruptions, so please come up with solutions so that new technologies are adopted without the disruptions and least pain possible,” he said.
Remarking how earlier each generation of telecom protocol lasted a few years Vaishnaw said, now technologies were changing very rapidly. He also said that virtualisation of technology was not only bringing in new opportunities but also new challenges. “ So how do we bring solutions which allow us to shift over from legacy systems to new solutions without disruption to current services?”
Commenting upon the telecom reforms initiated in September, Vaishnaw said, “the series of reforms, reduced the regulatory framework, simplified many things, brought many people oriented procedural changes, brought some structural changes.”
He then said the Modi government was open to new ideas and urged the telecom industry to give more ideas so that India can benchmark its abilities to the best in the world. “We want industry to keep adding value to people, so please come up with new suggestions for a regulatory framework,” Vaishnaw said.
Concluding his remarks, Vaishnaw said the most important point from the perspective of the government was to serve the most marginalized people in the country.
“While many initiatives have happened like sanctioning new towers, BharatNet to the last village in the country, we request the industry through this conference to come up with more such ideas, which will help bridge the digital gap, help us in connecting the unconnected,” Viashnaw said.
