Vivo store

NEW DELHI: Smartphone maker Vivo remains committed to the Indian market and is maintaining timelines for its manufacturing capacity expansion plans despite an ongoing investigation by the authorities over alleged tax evasion and money laundering.

“We remain committed to the
India market and are working to increase the production capacity of the manufacturing unit. Within this year, we have plans for exports also. The timelines are the same.” Paigham Danish, head of business strategy at Vivo India told ET.

Vivo, which has seven manufacturing facilities globally, is currently in the process of increasing its annual production capacity from 50 million to 60 million units by 2022. It has already invested Rs 1900 crore in India till 2021 and plans to invest Rs 1600 crore more by 2023 to double its annual local production capacity from 60 million and develop India as a global hub for exports.

The investment is part of the Rs 7500 crore in total that the brand plans to invest in the South Asian nation.
The company is increasing its focus on the Indian market by working on certain areas that help in local and global research and development for its handsets. It has already established its industrial design centre locally, and plans to scale it further.

“We have started working on some elements of R&D in India. Like the industrial design centre, which localises the colour, the look of the smartphone. This is one step towards that. The centre is currently in the establishing phase. The team works out of the Vivo HQ in Gurgaon.” Danish added.

Asked if the company plans to leverage local talent to help in its global
5G standardisation and patent-filing process, Danish said, “We have plans to explore standardisation in India. We currently don't have a base for the communication research centre in India. We are present in nine geographic locations, and we will always look for global talents to empower ourselves.”

The executive said Vivo was collaborating with Indian telcos to test its 5G phones and to ensure that all of its 5G handsets launched since 2020 support networks of both
Reliance Jio and Airtel.

“First phase is compatibility. Massification will take time, but we need to first work with the ecosystem to ensure the current
devices are compatible.” he added.

Vivo on Tuesday said it will release software updates this month to make most of its 5G-enable handsets work with both standalone and non-standalone 5G networks, the company exeutive said on the sidelines of Vivo Tech Day.

'More than six of Vivo smartphones are supporting the 5G SA (standalone) network while most of its 5G smartphones are compatible with NSA (non-standalone network).
