\"\" NEW DELHI: India’s No 2 telecom operator Vodafone<\/a> India Tuesday launched SMS-based ‘KisaanMitr<\/a>’ (farmers’ friend) initiative that will allow farmers to access real-time customized agricultural information services.

Vodafone India, as of March 2015, had 97.91 million
rural<\/a> subscribers out of total 338 million GSM technology rural customers, telecom group Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) in its recent report said.

\n\n\t“The KisaanMitr is available in 10 languages and is SMS-based service wherein farmers can sign up to get three free SMSes every day. This will also be an app-based service at a later stage,” Vodafone India ​Chief ​Executive Sunil Sood told ET.
\n\t \n\n\tThe UK-based telco has also kept platform open and will allow e​​cosystem partners including non-profits to leverage it for newer services and is likely to bring in aggregators for the real-time produce market information services.
\n\t \n\n\tThe process, according to Vodafone, is three​-tiered that include​s​ access to basic agricultural information, availability of market-related services and enhance access to financial inclusion and said that access to 3G network will enable new business models.
\n\t \n\n\tSood said that mobile technology can improve agricultural production and contribute to the economic development of the sector. The initiative, he said will allow farmers to get personalized crop advisory, weather information, pesticide composition and market price services.\n

\n\n\tThe service​ is free and currently available on trial basis and later​, it would be transformed into a subscription-based model with minimal charges as the company was not eyeing big revenue from this initiative.
\n\t \n\n\tIt is estimated that this initiative has a potential to benefit 70 million farmers by 2020 and feels that mobile technology is most ubiquitous to access relevant information.\n

\n\n\tVodafone Africa, Middle East and Asia Pacific region CEO Serpil Timuray said that mobile connections have a huge role to play and have potential to increase agricultural revenue by 2020.\n
