NEW DELHI: Vodafone India on Thursday welcomed the government’s move of demonetization which it considers is a move towards cashless economy. India’s second largest telecom operator has an app called ‘Vodafone M-Pesa’ which offers digital payment solutions to users.

“Vodafone India welcomes the Government’s bold step to accelerate India’s progress into a less cash economy. We reiterate our commitment to actualize the government’s vision through Vodafone M-Pesa that leverages the reach of mobile technology to enable financial inclusion and offers the convenience of a digital wallet for easy transactions,” said Suresh Sethi, Business Head, M-Pesa, Vodafone India.

“The unique cash out feature of Vodafone M-Pesa makes it the ideal digital wallet for masses, enabling users to digitise cash, remit it to family and friends, pay bills and/or withdraw it at their convenience from over 120,000 touch points across the country,” added Sethi.
While India may be going through cash crunch after the discontinuation of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes, it is Diwali for digital payment companies. Mobile wallet companies such as
Paytm and Freecharge have witnessed an overwhelming surge in traffic post PM Modi’s announcement of banning Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes.

Paytm reported a 435% increase in its overall traffic and registered a 200% hike in number of app downloads. Freecharge noted a sharp 12X overnight jump in the average wallet balance as consumers switched to digital payments to get most of their tasks done for which they were otherwise using cash.

Earlier in May this year, Narendra Modi had emphasised on the need for digital payments in his radio address ‘Mann ki Baat’. “We need to make India modern, transparent and have to implement procedures across the country. There was a time when transactions happened through barter system. Then notes and coins came. But now the world is moving towards a cashless economy. The start will be difficult but once you get used to it, will be simple,” Modi said in his address.

Ban of high denomination currency could be that long awaited push that was needed by the digital wallet companies while it also aims to curb black money. Along the lines of Vodafone M-Pesa, Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio also have their ‘
Airtel Money’ and ‘Jio Money’ apps respectively which allow users to send money, recharge and pay bills.

After the currency ban move, major digital payment companies tried to ‘cash in’ on the opportunity by sending notifications to users, urging them to go cashfree and recharge their
