Warburg Pincus-backed Princeton Digital Group (PDG), has launched its flagship data centre (MU1) in India at Airoli, Navi Mumbai, with an investment of $300 million, said a senior executive of the company.

Speaking exclusively to ET,
Vipin Shirsat, managing director (India), PDG said the company will look at adding additional data centre capacity in Mumbai and is also exploring other cities in India.

“So, we entered (the market) through Mumbai, because 50% of India's operating capacity is based out of Mumbai, and there is also an equal amount of demand for new capacities coming in Mumbai,” said Shirsat.

Referring to the expansion to other cities, he added the company is exploring opportunities to expand into cities like Chennai, Pune, Delhi, Hyderabad and Bengaluru.

“And each of these projects is going to be upwards of $200 million. So, that's the minimum size that we'll be looking at when we enter each of these cities” he said.

Mubadala-backed company’s
MU1 data centre provides 48 MW of critical IT capacity across two buildings, of which 4 MW will be available immediately while another 10MW will be available by early 2023. MU1 is built across ~6 acres within a larger IT campus at Arioli.

“We're starting by focusing on the larger cities, and have a parallel plan to enter into smaller cities. Then, over a period of time, we have plans to enter into tier-II cities to replicate similar network capability,” he added.

MU1 will be powered up to 40% by renewable energy and operate on minimal water consumption.

In addition to achieving IGBC Platinum certification - the highest standard of Green Buildings Certification - MU1 is the first Open Compute Project (OCP) certified data centre in the country, and will also be an Uptime Tier-III certified facility.

An Open Compute Project refers to an organisation that shares designs of data centre products and best practices among companies while a Tier-III data centre has multiple paths for power and cooling, and systems in place to update and maintain it without taking it offline.

“India is one of the fastest-growing data centre markets in the world and is a key focus market for PDG. We are committed to hyperscale grade capacity at global standards. The launch of MU1 further strengthens our position as a leading pan-Asia data centre operator focused on creating sustainable value and an enabler of digital growth,” said Rangu Salgame, chairman, chief executive officer and cofounder of PDG.
