Recently, Telegram founder<\/a> Pavel Durov<\/a> took to his Twitter account to share his thoughts about WhatsApp and privacy concerns. CEO Pavel Durov<\/a> in a revelation claimed that WhatsApp has been a surveillance<\/a> tool for the past 13 years.
Durov<\/a> in a Telegram<\/a> post on Durov’s Channel said that hackers could potentially have full access to everything on the smartphones of WhatsApp users. He said that it was possible through a security issue which was disclosed by WhastApp<\/a> itself last week.
“Hackers could have full access (!) to everything on the phones of WhatsApp users. This was possible through a security issue disclosed by WhatsApp itself last week. All a hacker had to do to control your phone was send you a malicious video or start a video call with you on WhatsApp,\" read Durov’s post on the Telegram<\/a> channel.
The 37-year-old went on to suggest that users may not be safe even after they update WhatsApp to the latest version. “You are probably thinking \"Yeah, but if I updated WhatsApp to the latest version, I am safe, right?” he wrote.
According to Durov, a similar security issue on the instant messaging platform was discovered in 2018, 2019, and another in 2020. He also mentioned that similar security concerns were also reported even before 2017 and before 2016 the platform did not have any encryption.
Durov in his long post seems to be suggesting that these issues were not merely incidental, but were planted backdoors. “Every year, we learn about some issue in WhatsApp that puts everything on their users' devices at risk. Which means it's almost certain that a new security flaw already exists there. Such issues are hardly incidental – they are planted backdoors. If one backdoor is discovered and has to be removed, another one is added,” he wrote.
The Saint Petersburg State University<\/a> alumnus went on to say that it did not matter if one was the richest person on the planet and if they had WhatsApp on their phone, all data could be accessible. He added that this was the reason that he deleted WhatsApp from his devices years ago. ‘Having it installed creates a door to get into your phone.” he wrote while clarifying that he was not pushing Telegram but urging users to use any messaging platform but steer clear from WhatsApp.
