Despite a delayed entry into the fast-growing Unified Payments Interface (UPI) ecosystem, WhatsApp Pay<\/a> processed 0.81 million UPI transactions<\/a> worth Rs 29.72 crore, an over 100% increase in both volume and value compared to November, data released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI<\/a>) showed.
Rivals PhonePe<\/a> and Google Pay<\/a> processed 902.03 million and 854.49 million transactions, respectively.
Walmart Inc.-owned PhonePe<\/a> overtook Google<\/a> Pay as the most-used UPI application in the month, facilitating transactions worth Rs 1.82 lakh crore, with a market share of 40%. Together, PhonePe and Google Pay<\/a> processed close to 80% of overall volumes on NPCI<\/a>’s real-time retail payment platform. Paytm<\/a> was the next-most used platform, processing 256.36 million payments.
A total of 2.2 billion transactions worth Rs 4.16 lakh crore were processed on UPI in December.
More than 40% of these payments were made to verified merchants and were classified as peer-to-merchant (P2M) transactions, the rest were peer-to-peer, or P2P transactions.
UPI’s top remitter bank, State Bank of India’s technical decline rate jumped to 8.96% from November’s 3.12%, second only to Union Bank of India—which had the highest technical decline rate of 10.75% in December.
Bank-owned apps such as those run by HDFC Bank, Axis Bank and ICICI Bank were among the 10 most used UPI apps along with Paytm<\/a> Payments Bank.
Unlike Google<\/a> Pay and PhonePe, which will have to reduce their market-share to less than 30% by the end of this year, the limits for others are set to kick in this month.
NPCI’s BHIM application maintained its position as the fifth most used payment app, with 24.80 million transactions worth Rs 7,748.29 crore in the month, the data showed.
