It might have been the biggest announcement made on behalf the current Indian government but nobody would have seen it coming yet. China-based manufacturer Foxconn<\/a>, renowned for making Apple iPhone, is eager to set up its shop in India and has made slew of promises to bring an industrial change in the country.

\nWhen the clock struck 8:45 pm on 4 August, the company's CEO made yet another visit to the country and spoke how it is now time for India to build its own operating system. It's not like India has never built an operating system itself but to ask for an alternative to something like an established force such as Windows or Android is like asking for a lot.

It's more than evident that m
os<\/a>t software majors have thrived on support from Indian-origin representation, but weren't they better off doing similar things within the country itself? Easier said than done one might say, and unfortunately that remains to be the reason for such OS profligacy.

\nThe Indian-OS dream actually started long way back in 2010 when the government itself intended to get things on board with platform called Bharat Operating System Solutions (BOSS) to be built by Defence Research & Development Organization (DRDO) of India. This OS was supposed to grow itself way up to the top, making it consumer-ready but usual culprits like lack of interest, insufficient funds and government support among others lead to its slow demise.
\n
\nSuch being the state of affairs, it was easy to see why the BOSS never got into the reckoning. So, now for the Foxconn CEO to suggest India to build itself another OS variably highlights the country's global standing.

\nThe sentiments from within the country haven't helped cases either. Recently, co-founder of Infosys, Narayana Murthy made a startling admission of the fact that no major invention or breakthroughs over the past 60 years have come from the country, blaming the way the technical education ecosystem has failed in its objective.

But as you might know, the original Silicon Valley comprises of legendary IT brands like Google, Microsoft and Facebook among others, while India's contingent come nowhere close to their standards.
\n
\nWe have been clamouring IT companies and tech wizards to build the next Google or Facebook within India, but can this really happen ever? Whatever may be the case, by highlighting the lack of an India-made OS, the Foxconn CEO may have ignited several long lost dreams.
