Carl Pei-led company Nothing has recently launched its first smartphone - the Nothing Phone (1) which is a mid-range device that offers only two cameras - the primary sensor and the ultra-wide-angle lens. Now, Samsung is planning to follow in Nothing’s footsteps to reduce the number of cameras on its upcoming mid-range smartphones. The South Korean tech giant usually places three or four cameras in its mid-range handsets like the - Galaxy A53 or the A33 devices. These smartphones house a quad-rear camera setup which includes - a primary shooter, an ultra-wide angle lens, a macro camera and a depth sensor.

How Samsung is planning to change the rear camera setup in mid-range phones
According to a report by The Elec, Samsung is planning to ditch the “useless” depth sensors in its upcoming Galaxy A24, A34, and A54 models which are expected to be released in 2023. However, the report mentions that the company might retain the macro sensor and release the upcoming handsets with a triple rear camera setup.

The report also claims that the Galaxy A24, Galaxy A34 and Galaxy A54 devices will house a triple-rear camera setup which will include - a primary camera, an ultrawide camera and a macro camera.

Moreover, the report also mentions that the Galaxy A34 device might house a 48MP primary camera while the A54 handset will include a 50MP main sensor. On the other hand, the Galaxy A34 device is expected to offer an 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens whereas the A54 will get only a 5MP ultra-wide sensor. The Galaxy A34 device is likely to launch in March 2023 while the A54 might get released a month later, the report claims.

Why Samsung is planning to change the rear camera setup in mid-range phones
According to a report by GSMArena, most manufacturers offering mid-range smartphones have been including only two useful cameras for the past few years. However, some phone makers have felt the need of adding more units to the rear camera setup which usually includes - a depth sensor, a monochrome lens or a macro shooter.

The report mentions that including these extra units has never made consumers buy mid-range smartphones for their camera capabilities. So, Samsung is expected to follow the new trend of adding only necessary units to de-clutter the rear camera setups. As per the report, Samsung is trying to reduce the costs associated with the depth sensor and focus more on strengthening the essential camera specs of the other remaining units.

Another report by Sammobile states that Samsung is “moving in the right direction” as the company has already started offering
OIS in its mid-range phones. The South Korean tech giant might also introduce telephoto cameras to its higher mid-range phones, the report suggests.
