“They will look at automating earlier in the company’s life cycle. As the customer orders, you would like to create the work order and want the order to start factory processes immediately. Such end-to-end automation will be available to small companies like never before and not just for big auto manufacturers. We are excited about that and working with some of our customers who push the envelope and are on the cutting edge of these new manufacturing and warehouse technologies,” he said while speaking at SuiteWorld 2022, Oracle NetSuite’s annual gathering of customers, partners, developers and industry professionals in Las Vegas.
NetSuite provides an integrated system that includes Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), inventory management, HR, professional services automation and omnichannel commerce, used by more than 32,000 customers in 217 countries.
Goldberg asserted that while automation is increasing, it does not mean replacing people. “Automation is the name of the game. But that implies more in terms of how employees can be more productive. Some aspects such as human touch and human judgment cannot be automated and that is an opportunity for everyone to have more value in the business and in their jobs,” he stated.
Speaking about the business in India and how localisations have been complex for NetSuite ERP, Goldberg said that handling the regulatory issues and tax compliances in every geography is important. “We are methodically stepping through and making sure that we don’t sell NetSuite until it's ready. We started with service companies in India and later will expand to product companies that have more complexities. It is what we have done in Brazil as well,” he highlighted.
Talking about how key partnerships have been signed in India earlier, he said that they are trying to go more widely into the market. “We need to be very careful about what the company does. Smaller companies are becoming more complex. There are the next generation of companies which are starting to think like they are hybrid company leaders and that they will have a product and a service. While NetSuite is well positioned for that, the regulatory and localisation perspective makes it a little more complicated,” he said.
Elaborating further, Goldberg said that they would be making a major investment over the next couple of years. “We will continue to find new partners who can help us. Every market has its complexities and it needs to be seen what sales model can work. There is also complexity in how we reach the right company as it is a very dynamic market and an economy with tons of businesses of all sizes,” he said.
Delving on how supply chain management has become extremely crucial for businesses, Goldberg said that thinner margins now imply automating better. “It is a world of rising costs where margins are thinner and one doesn’t want to necessarily pass on all costs to customers. It is critical to get supplies at the best possible cost and deliver on time. And it is happening at an early stage of companies’ existence. There is also the global economy narrative where companies that are starting now think globally a lot sooner than ever before,” he added.
Explaining this in the context of the pandemic, Goldberg said that companies had started preparing themselves for the times ahead. This included them looking at new geographies to plan their supply chain better. “They realised they needed this sort of resilience in the supply chain. Smaller companies did not do that in the past. We saw companies adopt more of our sophisticated supply chain capabilities in this time,” he said.
Last year, at SuiteWorld 2021, the conference had addressed the need for a more efficient supply chain function in the light of the upheaval that had followed. “We know that you need to be able to react more and more quickly to changes in your business environment,” Laura Maready, principal product manager for retail at NetSuite, had stated. “So, we created a dedicated planning repository so planning runs light and fast,” she said, detailing how their supply planning function had been rebuilt.
Reiterating such dynamics in the present environment as well, Goldberg said that everything in the whole value chain right from ordering supplies to delivering customer products has become more complex and difficult. “We would want things to be predictable again, as they were, say, in 2019. Right now, it all seems very volatile. If I have to choose between Just-in-Time versus Just-in-Case, I would go with Just-in-Case right now,” he added.
