<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>NEW DELHI: Taiwan-based contract manufacturer Wistron<\/a> has planned an investment of over Rs 2,900 crore in the country to ramp up efforts to manufacture the upcoming iPhone 12<\/a> in India, Business Standard reported citing sources.

The Apple supplier has commenced trials of the iPhone 12 project at its new facility near Bengaluru. It has also initiated hiring process for the same, aiming to launch the latest Apple device by the middle of the next year, the report added.

Wistron is aiming to employ 10,000 employers at the new facility while an estimated 1,000 workers are already working at the facility.

The iPhone 12 will be the seventh iPhone model to be manufactured in India, giving a boost to PM Modi’s clarion call for an ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’. Apple has so far localised the production of five models in India, including the iPhone SE (first generation), iPhone 6S, iPhone 7<\/a>, iPhone XR, and iPhone 11.

Also the localised production of the iPhone SE (second generation) is expected to begin shortly in India. Till now, the localised production of iPhones was only limited to older models at a lower price tag.

Pegatron<\/a>, Apple's second largest iPhone maker, has also applied for the Indian government's PLI scheme and has already registered its India subsidiary to support the iPhone maker.

Foxconn<\/a>, on the other hand, is also investing $1 billion in India, albeit not exclusively for Apple.
