""NEW DELHI: Vodafone India has appealed to its competition to work responsibly and help grow the telecom industry at a time when Reliance Jio’s entry has increased pressure on existing players with rock-bottom data tariffs and free voice calls.

"Competition in any industry is good, welcome and helps the industry grow and evolve further and I’m sure this will be the case. Our only request to competitors and any incumbents is to work responsibly and help grow the value of the industry and value for the consumer,"
Sandeep Kataria, director – commercial at Vodafone India, said on Tuesday.

Vodafone on Tuesday launched 'Flex' plans that allow its prepaid users consume data, voice and messages, interchangeably through a single recharge. The recharge packs start at Rs 119, which will offer 325 Flexs, going up to Rs 399 that offers 1,750 Flexs. Flexs are deducted when a customer uses voice or data or messages.

One Flex is deducted for each MB of data, each minute of incoming call on roaming or each message. Two Flexs are deducted for a minute of local outgoing or STD call or a minute of outgoing call on roaming, the company said, claiming that the new offer will provide up to 25 per cent saving.

"If a person buys a base tariff product right now, our charges may be to the tune of Rs 1.20 per minute. This will come down significantly. For the combination of packages, it (Flex) will be amongst our lowest (priced)," Kataria said.

Vodafone expects users to move to the Flex set of plans from the existing myriad prepaid plans available in the market. Over 90 per cent of Vodafone's 200 million users are prepaid customers.

Reliance Jio launched on September 5 pegging data rates at Rs 50 per GB, which is among the lowest tariffs for data in the world, with an aim to amass about 100 million consumers. The new entrant also offered free voice calls, a direct hit at incumbent telcos that get about 80 per cent of their existing revenues from voice calls.

Kataria, however, said such tariffs come with several conditions. "You do need to look beyond just a statement, to see is it really prudent to call it zero (voice tariffs) because it comes with caveats and conditions," he said.

When asked whether Vodafone would reduce headline tariffs in order to combat Jio's offerings, the company said it continuously evaluates tariffs, but is keener on giving good value to consumers. Kataria said, "I strongly believe that tariffs are not a long term differentiator, rather service, customer service, problem resolution and new products that we bring to the market, will be the differentiators."

Jio and incumbent telcos have been in a bitter war of words, with the former alleging inadequate points of interconnect leading to failure of three-fourths of the calls made on its network. Vodafone has since tripled the points of interconnect required to take calls made on one network to another.

Vodafone on Tuesday launched 'Flex' plans that allow its prepaid users consume data, voice and messages, interchangeably through a single recharge.
["Airtel","Vodafone","industry","Sandeep Kataria","Reliance Jio
telecomnews/work-responsibly-to-grow-industry-vodafone-urges-peers"}}" data-authors="[" "]" data-category-name="" data-category_id="" data-date="2016-09-21" data-index="article_1">
