Telecom minister Ashwini Vaishnaw<\/a> on Saturday said that the government is working to launch 5G<\/a> in 200 cities over the next six months. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a roundtable conference meeting with the information technology (IT) ministers of different states, Vaishnaw said though the target was to cover 200 cities, the momentum of work was such that 600 cities would be covered in the next six months.

“The idea is to cover close to 80-90% of the country in two years. BSNL<\/a> (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd) should start rolling out 5G by August of next year. We have three good private players, one public sector player ecosystem… of four competitors in the market,” Vaishnaw said.

He added that the tariff of 5G would remain such that “India would remain an affordable market”.

The 5G service was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi<\/a> at India Mobile Congress on Saturday.

The focus of the government, Vaishnaw said, was now on developing alternatives to the radio networks, as well as on manufacturing telecom network equipment in India.

The Department of Telecommunications has also tied up with 60 universities to provide 5G test beds for them to be able to experiment on various aspects of the technology, Vaishnaw said.

“Our plan is to be able to provide a 5G test bed to whoever asks for it. But for now, we have tied up with 60 universities. People who are still in college, if they start developing new things, imagine the number of startups that will come,” the minister said.
