The tablet PC market was led by Apple (38%), Samsung<\/a> (18.7%), and Huawei<\/a> (12.7%), respectively, followed by Amazon, Lenovo<\/a>, and other vendors.
The Cupertino based giant Apple secured the first position in the market primarily due to its iPad shipments, which grew by 20% YoY to reach 14 million units, meanwhile, Samsung maintained second-place with 7 million, registering a growth of 40% YoY.
Huawei on the other hand, secured third place with a 45% YoY increase in shipments, recording a particularly strong performance in Western Europe. Huawei was led by Amazon with 37% YoY increase in shipments, and then Lenovo in the fifth place. Lenovo which also leads the overall PC market was the fastest-growing tablet vendor with an increase in its market share by 53% YoY.
Though the tablet PC market had faltered in recent years, its demand in Q2 2020 was driven by consumers and businesses seeking basic access to computing power and larger screens for remote working, learning, and leisure.
“Tablets enjoyed a renaissance in Q2 2020 because the devices<\/a> tick so many boxes for remote work and education use,” said Canalys Analyst Ishan Dutt.
“These devices have gained traction as primary devices for work and it is vital to include them when evaluating the PC market as a whole. Apple and Lenovo’s recent success shows that having a tablet offering as a mainstream PC vendor is invaluable,” Dutta added.
Factors that worked in the favor of the tablet PC market include ramping up of production by vendors to meet the renewed demand for tablet PCs and financial incentives on devices and data offered by retailers and carriers to encourage tablet purchases.
“The channel and carrier ecosystem around tablets has also played a significant role in this stellar Q2 performance,” said Canalys Senior Analyst Ben Stanton.
“Vendors and retailers in mature markets have offered massive discounts as part of their back-to-school promotions. They have also ramped up their capacity to manage online sales and delivery in the face of lockdown measures,” Stanton added.
Stanton explained that having a wide range of connected tablet options has been crucial in many mobile-first Asia Pacific markets where 4G connectivity is cheaper and reliable than broadband connectivity.
The total PC market (including tablets), grew 14% to 110.5 million in Q2 2020. Lenovo took first place, shipping 20.2 million desktops, notebooks, and tablets, a year-on-year increase of 12%. Apple came second with 19.6 million shipments, up 18% year on year on the back of strong shipments of its iPads and MacBooks<\/a>. HP, Dell<\/a>, and Samsung secured positions among the top 5 vendors.
