<\/figure>NEW DELHI: Xiaomi India<\/a> head Manu Jain<\/a> has said that there may be an anti-China sentiment among people at play, but expects things to normalise over time and doesn\u2019t see any meaningful impact on its business, with smartphone demand<\/a> expected to pick up only in the second half of 2020.
\u201cPeople are angry and upset and would want to blame someone. Over a period of time, they will understand and will not take it out against any particular company\u2026 This will not impact the business in any meaningful way,\u201d said Manu Jain, Xiaomi<\/a> India head.
He added that Xiaomi India was a local company by all parameters, with local executives at the leadership level. \u201cWe act like an Indian company since we have local productions. Data is stored in India as well. We have been trying to build a truly local company.\u201d<\/div><\/div>Xiaomi to revisit product portfolio for India<\/strong>
Xiaomi said that demand for smartphones to be muted in the April-June quarter and the rebound is likely to take place in the second half of the calendar year. It said that the anti-China sentiment will not impact its business in India in any meaningful way.
\u201cSince last 45 days, there is no sales and revenue for every brand. The ramp up will be slow due to restrictions and red zone\u2026Q2 might be a difficult time for everyone but sales will rebound from Q3 onwards at similar levels as earlier,\u201d Jain said.
As per market analysts, smartphone shipments are likely to fall to 135-145 million in 2020, from 160-170 million 2019.
\u201cAs we have seen in other countries like China, demand goes up once lockdown is lifted. V shaped demand is likely in India's smartphone market.
Jain said that consumer buying pattern will change in India and Xiaomi will revisit its product portfolio in the country to accommodate this change.
\u201cThe mid-segment for smartphone will even further increase. Mid-premium and premium segments are likely to slow down as people will now look for buying slightly affordable phones. We definitely expect the curve to change slightly,\u201d Jain said.<\/div><\/div>Asked if there will be an impact on the entry-level segment, Jain said that customers will not go for a bad quality smartphone if their budget is low, and rather prefer to go for a feature phone<\/a>. \u201cIf they decide, they can\u2019t afford a smartphone, they will go for a feature phone. However, it was happening even before the lockdown.\u201d

India recently announced some foreign direct investment (FDI) restrictions apparently targeted at China to prevent hostile takeovers by Chinese companies of Indian firms whose market values have dipped because of covid-19<\/a> related uncertainties.
Asked if Xiaomi could face any problem in India going forward, Jain said that for investment in start-ups or for any new initiatives, the company needs to take the government approval. \u201cWhile working on previous assignments, we never faced the problems. I don\u2019t think it should be a big challenge to seek government approval for investing in startups after new FDI norms,\u201d
Xiaomi India is asking its employees and partners to use the government-backed contact tracing app, Arogya Setu<\/a>. He added that the company hasn't received any official communication mandating preloading of the app but if it comes, then it will abide by it.
