The vendor said it will now ramp up investments and hiring to support the growth in India which has become it's top priority outside China.
“We welcome third party or independent to validate our solutions. We also welcome any authority including the Indian government to check ZTE products and solutions. Hopefully, it eliminates those concerns and accusations of the Chinese companies like ZTE,” Xiao Ming, President ZTE Global Sales, told ET in an exclusive interview.
“ZTE is committed to being a very open and transparent company… we are confident these issues will eventually go away.”
His comments coincide with the ongoing tussle between the US government and another Chinese gear vendor Huawei. The US has raised security concerns regarding Huawei’s 5G equipment, given the former’s perceived proximity to the Chinese government.
Telecom secretary Aruna Sundararajan recently said that the government is yet to take a decision on whether to allow Chinese gear makers to take part in 5G trials, saying the government would examine all security-related issues on the back of apprehensions raised by various countries.
ZTE’s Xiao said that cybersecurity is a common challenge for operators and suppliers including ZTE, and “open approach and strong investment” is required to address this challenge. “We are confident that we should be able to mitigate those potential cybersecurity attack to protect information,” he added.
ZTE, which suffered a temporary ban by the US government last year, has now recovered fully with its monthly manufacturing volume reaching an all-time high last month in the company’s history, the executive claimed.
“During the ban period, ZTE didn't fire a single employee, and kept paying the standard salary for almost three months…customers now recognize our technology capability and our solutions are very competitive. We were awarded a lot of new contracts everywhere including India. We are growing market share at Vodafone Idea in India,” he added.
ZTE expects its India operations will see growth this year on the back of business from Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL) and state-run BSNL. It is also working with Bharti Airtel in a few circles.
The executive said that the growth in the Indian market has encouraged ZTE to make more investments. He added that the company will hire more people this year to support new business from Vodafone Idea.
“India clearly is the top priority for ZTE globally. This market is really competitive and the environment is very complicated, but ZTE business is growing, which means we are more capable of investing more in this market and will be able to generate more jobs,” he said.
Having bagged five circles for 4G expansion from VIL, ZTE is currently competing with China’s Huawei and Europe’s Nokia and Ericsson for VIL’s wireline contracts, which are expected to be finalised soon.
