The conversation, and the eyeballs, at CES 2018 were beyond gadgets, and focused on what we at CMR, term as ‘Appgets’.

At CMR, we have been tracking technology for three decades now, and we believe, this moment in history is pivotal. Until now, gadgets were ruling the roost, providing platforms to apps.

This year, the primary focus at the CES was on the software applications, with gadgets trying to catch-up.

Appgets represents an evolution of devices, with new devices springing out of apps. Such devices will be self-sufficient, and will not require the support of a smartphone.

Some of the key characteristics underlying Appgets are that they are standalone, voice- and AI-enabled devices that sprung out of a tangibalization of an existing software application. Appgets have capabilities transcending traditional product boundaries, and offer customers, a richer and more unparalleled experience.

Appgets benefit from the current technology and market conditions that are contributing to greater integration and convergence than ever before. Appgets benefit from advancements in the following domains:

- Voice interfaces

- Edge computing at the device level,

- IoT/Cognitive systems

- Blockchains and

- VR/AR capabilities

Appgets will lead to an evolution of technology interfaces, including interfaces that are deliberate, multisensory and/or prediction-driven by a combination of voice, haptics, or using AR/VR gesture commands.

Today, appgets touch human lives in many endless ways. Some of the most common examples of Appgets include speakers, headphones, watches, fitness/activity trackers, smart thermostats, smart shoes, among others.

At the CES 2018, we saw UnderArmor unveiling the Hovr Phantom and Hovr Sonic,

focusing on design and performance first, and integrating tracking capabilities later on. Nissan debuted the “brain-to-vehicle” interface that imparts semi-autonomous capabilities to its cars, or Harman showing off its MoodRoof, incorporating serene mood lighting.

The most common Appget feature is Voice interfaces. Voice Interfaces impart the experience of “being aware, and being in the know” in a seamless, connected environment, anytime, anywhere. Voice interface was integrated into products of all types, at CES 2018, from Smart Glasses to In-Car Assistants, from Smart Thermostats to Speakers, from Showers to Toilets, among others.

However, beyond the sights and sounds at CES, the key, immediate, defining struggle for Appgets is to gain supremacy over the smart homes. The centerpiece was of course the war between Google vs Amazon. Both are seeking to integrate their voice assistants into daily lives through a range of partners. For instance, Alexa is now connected and integrated with >4000 smart-home devices from >1000 brands, and having >30,000 voice apps. On the other hand, Google Home – the key challenger to Amazon Alexa, aims to spend 2018 in making its voice assistant, more conversational, and more integrated into human lives, imparting near ubiquitous strengths to it. The impending launch of Apple HomePod makes the battle all the more interesting for smart homes.

Make no mistake. The future will be all about appgets. Appgets will be the new mainstream. What Appgets does sorely require is a unifying, all-pervasive operating system that integrates the software and hardware. The question is: Will Google be able to beat Amazon to win the race? Or, will Apple spring a late surprise?

2019 will offer cues for us.

Appgets:
- Blockchains
