In the present scenario, the role of telecom service providers has extended to that of ‘enabler’, in facilitating active tracking and management of the COVID-19 crisis, and keeping the economy running by allowing people to work from home. Just as importantly, they are helping communities, and families stay connected and entertained as self-isolation and social distancing become central to containing the crisis.

However, in meeting the rapidly increasing demands of broadband and mobile connectivity across a large and dispersed nation, service providers are facing a crisis of their own, in addition to the global pandemic. The primary challenge is the expansion of broadband bandwidth required to support the massive surge in overall usage of video conferencing, mobile voice service instant messaging, content streaming, etc. To put this in perspective, Cisco Webex registered 14.3 billion meeting minutes in the month of March. It is inspiring how quickly companies and state bodies have made the switch to a new way of working and connecting. Still, we must acknowledge the additional pressure that this is placing on telecom infrastructure.

Another concern brought to the fore by the current situation is the real-time redistribution of traffic caused by fluctuating ‘busy hour’ patterns. Along with their network partners, telecom service providers have high levels of automation and orchestration built into the networks to monitor and manage networks in real-time. The network is seeing a shift in traffic hotspots and peak usage hours, and as peak hours change, usage is flattening at different times. Consumers are also upgrading to faster speeds, and higher capacity data plans to support work and study from home needs.

To respond to all of this in near real-time, telcos are advancing investments and boosting network capacity to tackle the upsurge in data consumption and ensure uninterrupted mobile broadband connectivity to their retail and enterprise customers. They are activating alternate channels such as bank ATMs, pharmacies, and grocery stores to help customers who aren’t online to recharge, and strengthening their digital channels to provide an outstanding customer experience even now.

Today, the internet has become critical to sustaining livelihoods and supply chains, with economies, governments, and communities relying on it to keep things moving, and telecom service providers are at the forefront of this. To manage the present surge, they need to ramp up their network transport capacity through rapid deployment of network equipment, upgrading networks remotely to increase capacity, and manage peak hour traffic through automation and orchestration solutions. They also need to reduce network congestion by enhancing subscriber connection speeds in congested cells to significantly expand overall cell capacity, which helps in absorbing growing subscriber traffic while ensuring network quality.

Aiding in these efforts, several companies are offering access to key technologies across network capacity expansion and congestion management to support service providers in managing the load on their networks. Further, many firms have extended easy financing options to telecom operators to help mitigate some of their financial challenges.

We are living in extraordinary times that call for such united efforts, as these problems are much too complex in magnitude and scale for anyone to solve alone. I truly believe that by working together, we will emerge stronger and better prepared from this crisis, which could serve as an impetus for service providers to transform into value-driven communication players by leveraging automation, security, and collaboration.

The current crisis is shaping a new reality for telecom service providers, who are working tirelessly to ensure seamless and uninterrupted connectivity across the country – undoubtedly the need of the hour. At this inflection point, enterprises need to stand with the telecom industry and leverage the power of technology to help them combat the challenges that they face.
