The world is currently facing an unprecedented crisis. It’s not just the pandemic that has engulfed the world, but the various social, economic and psychological challenges it throws at us. Fortunately, the telecom industry has been prepared for this. Cloud communication, stronger online identity, robust data centres and chatbots - telecom has been hand holding us through this, keeping us afloat and future-ready.

Here are some of the big moves that are set to be watershed developments for not just the telecom sector, but for how the world goes about its everyday life from here on:

1. 5G: 2020 has long been called the year of 5G. And it will be. Gartner predicts that worldwide 5G network infrastructure revenues will touch $4.2 billion in 2020, recording year-over-year growth of 89 percent. 5G networks will mostly cover one-third of the world's population by 2025. Unlimited data plans are here already, but expect to see faster download speeds, 360-degree 5G solutions and apps with features that we’re unable to even imagine today.

2. Cloud Communications: In 2020, Cloud initiatives are expected to account for 70% of all tech spending. By 2025, about 80% of businesses worldwide are expected to migrate complete to Cloud. As teams work from all corners of the world, work-from-home becomes more popular and with fluidity of positions, locations and job descriptions, it’s soon going to be impossible to remain efficient unless you’re on Cloud. The pandemic has only fastened this process.

3. Data centres & Infrastructure: Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) has helped innovate with technologies that reduce power consumption and cost of ownership, saving global business billions of dollars that could be put to better use elsewhere - like research and product development. With companies now able to manage power monitoring and control, cooling-systems monitoring and control, IT asset management, capacity planning, and data center simulation, DCIM is here to stay.

4. Chat Apps for Business: With 41 million messages being sent out every minute the world over, chat apps for business is a necessity. By 2022, 3 billion people are expected to use chat apps for everyday things. Rich Communication Services across non-Apple platforms enhances the experience and reach multiple times over. With 24*7 availability and ability to handle many more processes like phonebook polling and in-call multimedia, this could well make the traditional SMS obsolete.

5. Chatbots: AI-driven chatbots have not only smoothened human-machine interaction but also saved millions of man-hours of doing repetitive, simple tasks like user request analysis. It has greatly enhanced brand experiences and would soon do away with the requirement to have massive human resources invested in servicing preliminary processes, sparing them for higher level tasks.

6. Mobile Identity: At the heart of every digital ecosystem, is the mobile identity process that has greatly improved the world over. Billions now conduct secure, friction-less online transactions for an array of services - from bank transfers and buying cat food to paying for cable and signing up to be organ donors. With face recognition and biometrics verification available on most smartphones, mobile identity has taken on a whole new leap and will soon, become a hygiene factor for all online transactions.

7. CPaaS with Unified API: CPaaS is Cloud-based Communications Platforms as Services. It allows developers to add programmable real-time communications features e.g. voice chat or text into their applications through APIs. This can be done without having to build back-end infrastructures. Using APIs, business systems can be customised and configured to suit, and even better is that CPaaS can run above any existing legacy systems. This means businesses can now virtualise communications and integrate them with open architecture services, metamorphosing brand experiences.

8. Deeper use of technology: Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning have been consistently evolving through the decade. Healthcare, logistics, e-commerce, sports, human resources and cyber security, deeper use of AI and ML will lead the way to the future.

Overall, I feel that 5G, IoT, AI and Diversified Ecosystems will lead the way for the future of mankind, not just telecom. As we wade our way through this pandemic, let’s not forget that technology and telecom have been the foundation on which economies and lives continued to move forward even in the most unprecedented times. This World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, let’s take a moment to appreciate all the leaps the sector has taken, and attempt to continue tracking the numerous ways in which it will continue to transform the lives of even the most economically vulnerable, as it always has.
